Brief: Two inner city apartment buildings each having a centralised water heater that delivered unrecorded/measured hot water to each apartment. Our brief was to retro-fit 500 hot & cold water meters into two inner city multi-story apartment buildings, and have a system that enables the each meter to report to a centralised management platform for the consumption to be on charged to each apartment.

Solution: We partnered with Waterware Ltd who had a wireless water meter solution imported from Europe. The system required each meter to send a signal to a relay device that would then collate and send a bulk report via sms. Every apartment needed to have two meters installed, and this can prove to be difficult given cramped and restricted working space of cavities and ceiling spaces.

Critical factor or goal: Every apartment meter needed to be coded and correctly installed so every litre of water consumption is accounted for, and that each meter could be easily serviced when required in the future.

Result: The project was carried out quickly with minimal disruption of each tenancy, and every meter successfully reported consumption. The cost of the installation has enabled the apartment owners to be able to recover the cost of hot & cold water in a very fair consumption based methodology. Water overall has been reduced due to a change in occupier behavior and user pays outcome.
